The Audacity of Hype

In all of my adult life, I have never seen a media love affair with anyone in the political world like the one currently going on involving Barack Obama and the mainstream media. It spreads from Hollywood to the local beat reporter and most do not shy from their brazen support of the Senator from Illinois. The media's affinity for all things which are bad for society and their unabashed elevation of so-called "role models" like Paris Hilton and Rosie O'Donnell give us a glimpse of their own moral standards for decency and patriotism that we down in fly-over country continually shun. But I have to say that this propaganda machine for Obama is a formidable one indeed. It has come to the point where any sense of non-partisan reporting is hard to find. You can forget about someone asking him tough questions and trying to hold him accoutable for his views and statements as anyone who does is quickly labled and dismissed for not falling into line, one of the lefts oldest tricks.

Whenever I have encountered an Obama supporter, I have noticed a particular trait within their logic for supporting a man who up until a year and a half ago no one knew much about. The trait of which I speak is gullibility. Their support for this narcissitic, self-absorbed messiah is based on nothing more than emotion and nonsensical visions of a utopian world. A world devoid of poverty, war, and class discrimination, is a beautiful and lofty dream, but also lacks any common sense or logic while it denounces certain undeniable facts. They have fallen for the messenger without listening to the message. They have removed themselves from any critical thought process concerning his vision for America and have chosen to embrace a candidate whose policies can only evoke memories of other socialist movements from our nations past. The scary thing is this time around, socialism, disguised as compassionate democracy, is getting more traction with people the people of this country who are completely unaware of the roll back that is in progress on our freedoms. A Barack Obama presidency will certainly alter the face of this nation forever. I shudder to think of an Obama Supreme Court and an ever expanding federal government with cradle to grave entitlements. America must reject Obama's socialist dream this November and restore our founding principles of self-government or perish in the name of "change".

Two Must-Read Articles

Whenever I come across great articles on current political trends and the like, I feel compelled to pass them on through the pages of this blog. Here are two great commentaries, one from Bill O'Reilly and the other from Gerard Baker of the TimesOnline. Baker's column is absolutely hilarious as it plays to the "messianic" title Obama's supporters have bestowed upon him. Check 'em out!

Obama's Court

While the U.S. Supreme Court has handed down some senseless and shaky decisions, long on ideology and short on precedent and constitutional deliberation, there has been occasion to celebrate. There is no doubt President Bush's additions of Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito have done wonders in helping to balance a court that was on the verge of a tyrannical power-trip and helped to re-introduce "original intent" back to the court. One could only imagine what the Supreme Court would look like if Al Gore had been the one to win two terms and had his judicial nominees put on the court. But can't we say the same thing about an Obama presidency as well? There is speculation the next president will get to fill 2 to 3 seats on the Supreme Court. The question is, could our democracy withstand this shift from justices who believe in precedent and the Framer's original intent to those who do not use the U.S. Constitution as their guide, justices who have substituted our founding document for "public sentiment", political and philosophical ideologies, and "world views"? How can we claim to still have a democracy when the will of the people is superceded by judicial activism? We can already see this playing out in court rooms across America today and one wonders if the American people will stand for our founding principles or lay down to a new master and a new Obama court?

Barack Obama has already discussed his judicial philosophy in numerous lectures including one at the University of Chicago Law School where stated that ultra-liberal (socialist) Justice Ruth-Bader Ginsberg was a "very sensible judge". I think it is a safe bet Obama will nominate, if he is elected, justices who share his political ideology and use the courts not as they were constitutionally designed, but as a weapon to subjugate and push his liberal philosophy onto the American people. This has been the weapon of the liberals for decades as they know the American people would never pass their measures and endorse outright socialism at the ballot box, so they use the courts to bypass the will of the people leaving us only to wonder what happend to our country and her freedoms?

One cannot state enough how critical this falls election will be if for this reason alone. John McCain has already stated he will nominate based on their ability to interpret the Constitution and those who use that very document to arrive at their decisions and not political and philosophical winds. Our entire system of self government will be on the ballot this fall and I pray that America has the sense to take back what has been taken from them, the right to self govern.

A Real Conservative

I don't think its any secret to those who follow politics that the United States government is out of control. The Democrats (socialists) feel there isn't one problem the country faces that can't be solved with huge tax increases and expanding the size of the federal government. The problem is too many Republicans have fallen into line with this sort of thinking as well. The Founding Father's vision of "limited government" was thrown out the window decades ago and the march to socialism continues on at the peril of our liberties and our fortunes. There is coming a time in the not too distant future when we are going to have to STOP the path we are on or face a very grim reality that the United States is dying a slow death brought about by the very ones we the people elected to save us. Unfortunately, an uninformed and apathetic electorate don't seem to notice the dilemma and continue to throw gasoline on the fire.

It is important to acknowledge those out there on the front lines of politics who are really standing up for the people of this nation by spreading their accomplishments, and this is the exact reason for this post. Senator Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) is one of those true conservative heroes, standing up to government interference, regulation, and expansion. Over the past year, Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) has placed “holds” on dozens of bills that Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) had slated for expedited passage through the Senate. With the legislative session drawing to a close, Reid has now bundled all of these bills into one massive package that he plans to cram through the Senate with one single vote. Learning of Reid’s plan, Coburn spoke from the Senate floor:

That bill is coming about because myself and several other senators have refused to allow those bills to go without debate on this floor and without the ability to amend them. Now, some of them are very good things we ought to be about. But we should not be about it until we are going to inculcate and act as senators the same way every other family in this country has to act; that is, by making a decision based on priorities. …

By historical standards, this is supposed to be the greatest deliberative body in the world. In the 110th Congress, 890 bills have passed — 890. Fifty of them have had debate. Only 50 have had debate. And for most of those, the debate has been extremely limited and shortened through the power of the majority leader. …

So is it any wonder that only 9% of the American public has any significant confidence in the Congress to put forward their interests? We are going to be doing this at a time when the No. 1 issue in this country is energy security and energy prices, but we are going to put a bill on the Senate floor that grows the government, that creates 70 new programs, and spends somewhere between $25 billion and $50 billion.

I would tell my colleagues that most people sitting down to their dinner table think we have our priorities messed up, and they are right. We do.
Earlier in his speech, Coburn noted that according to the Government Accountability Office, federal spending is already around 20% of GDP. If we do nothing to change current policy, it is set to rise to 35% of GDP by 2038. That number is a huge threat to the liberty of America. It is high time the Senate started an honest debate about it.

Don't Blame Capitalism

As someone who likes to stay abreast of the differing views and opinions from a wide variety of people on both sides of the isle, I have noticed an alarming trend lately from the folks over on the left. It seems they feel our current economic problems are the result of runaway capitalism and not surprisingly, they are suggesting moving away from the free market. To anyone who has paid attention to politics this doesn't come as any shock as those on the left today are up to their eyeballs in socialism with the roots of their political and social ideologies firmly rooted in Marxist thought and policy. I have advocated a complete and total rejection of any socialist policy when it comes to freedom and the rights of man which by the way, still come from God and not government entities. The question is, how can government control and regulate the economy and we still call ourselves free? In order to control and regulate the economy, you have to control the people involved and taking part in the economy which is exactly what the left feels the role of government should be. That leaves us, the American people, with very little freedom. I can assure you that would only be the beginning. But lets ask ourselves if their current criticisms of capitalism are to blame for our economic problems?

An article in the National Post has challenged the lefts assertion that capitalism is the villain and warns of further socialist policies that subject the world's economies to futher collapse. Terence Corcoran writes,
Two major related threats loom over the world economy: credit crises and rising inflation. What do these two menaces have in common? Bankers, hedge-fund managers, speculators and capitalism in general have been taking the hit for the economic turmoil, both for credit risk and inflation. But the looming collapse of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac in the United States should help change the focus a little. We are now getting down to the heart of the matter, which turns out not to be rampant capitalism but out of control back-door socialism.
Corcoran goes on to say,
There is nothing free market about the two American mortgage backers, hybrid institutions created by the U.S. government to support mortgages and make home buying easier and more affordable for Americans. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, prodded by Congress and regulators, socialized trillions of dollars of mortgage risk on the backs of U. S. taxpayers. Along with dozens of other U. S. government programs that lured American's into a home-buying frenzy, the two institutions -- now getting even more socialist backing from Washington -- stand among the leading creators of the U. S. mortgage and credit crisis.
Any commentaries or critiques of capitalism cannot be taken seriously if one can see government interference and regulation and still call it capitalism.  Capitalism doesn't work that way as its based off of free markets and investment in and ownership of the means of production, distribution, and exchange of wealth which is made and maintained chiefly by private individuals or corporations. See, they want their cake and to eat it too. You cannot have government interference in a supposed free market and then dare call it capitalism, followed by blaming capitalism for the its failures and shortcomings. Capitalism is the only system that empowers the individual which is the ultimate freedom. Economic freedom is the beginning of true freedom as it leads the individual to political and social freedom by giving one the right to spend their time choosing whatever endeavor makes them happy.

As I have mentioned in previous posts, the Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves when they see the role of the federal government continue to expand. They specifically set out to limit the power of the central government in our Constitution and held the view that too much power in the hands of government paved the way for servitude. As the U.S. government expands, we lose more of our wealth and more importantly our freedoms. The American people need to turn away from big government and stop looking to the elitists in Washington D.C. to solve every little problem that comes their way as this plays right into the hands of those who seek to take our freedoms. They are essentially training the American people to be completely dependent on government for all things. Free markets, free enterprise, individual responsibilty, and individual freedom, far from any government interference and regulation are the cornerstones of a free and economically prosperous people.

There is struggle today in politics that will play out in this falls presidential election. Will we choose to cede more power, control, and money to a goverment that has abandoned its Constitutional role at the price of our feedoms? Or will we stand for those powerful principles our Founding Fathers used to guide them in setting up the most free and prosperous nation the world has known? This nation really is "the last best hope" and should it fail, what would happen to mankind? I choose not to be a slave to any government and implore you to stand up for freedom and the rights of man.

"It might be demonstrated that the most productive system of finance will always be the least burdensome." - Alexander Hamilton  1788

"A Constitution of Government once changed from Freedom, can never be restored. Liberty once lost, is lost forever." - John Adams

"Too Liberal To Fight"

The title of this post was taken from a quote by the former Soviet leader and premier Nikita Krushchev. The quote's context was from the Soviet's prodding and pushing of President John F. Kennedy's buttons during the Cuban missile crisis and the percieved reluctance and unwillingness to use any means necessary to protect America and her allies. Krushchev never doubted America's might but did doubt Kennedy's resolve saying he was "too liberal to fight".

Given the constant gaffes by the Senator from Illinois concerning just about every issue, none have been more alarming than his comments concerning the war on terror and most imortantly, the war in Iraq. He has shifted and wobbled so often on his positions, its hard to tell just where Obama really stands on this all too important issue. No one has written a better piece on the situation than the PatriotPost's Mark Alexander. Alexander's words hit home and the questions he raises are not only fair, but should be asked by every single American who enters a voting booth this November. It is my hope that those who read the following, will pass it on to as many as they can. The PatriotPost can be reached at  http://patriotpost.us/ and is a vital conservative tool. Here is the article by a true patriot, Mark Alexander.

Obama, the National Security Neophyte

By Mark Alexander

This week, Iranian Islamist Mahmud Ahmadi-Nejad tested his new ballistic missile, the Shahab-3—range 1,250 miles. Next door in Iraq, 550 metric tons of “yellowcake” uranium ore, which Saddam intended to weaponize for use in his non-existent WMD program, were removed from Tuwaitha. (That’s enough for more than 100 medium-sized nuclear boomers.) And while al-Qa’ida has been routed in Iraq, there was plenty of evidence this week that jihadis are putting up fierce resistance in Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Seems like this is as good a week as any to pause and ponder, “Who should be our next commander in chief?”

The most important constitutional role of our president is that of commander in chief—which is why every Patriot, every American, every human on the planet, should be deeply concerned about the prospect of a “President Obama.”

If Barack Hussein Obama, the most liberal member of the U.S. Senate, persuades voters that he is a “centrist candidate” and parlays that deception into defeating John McCain, there will be plenty of “change” in the coming years—unpleasant at best and catastrophic at worst.

Arguably, since our nation’s founding, no candidate has been less qualified than Obama to be his political party’s nominee for president of the United States. And nowhere is Obama more ill prepared than in matters of national security.

Obama responded to Iran’s missile tests this week, saying, “Now is the time to work with our friends and allies, and to pursue direct and aggressive diplomacy with the Iranian regime backed by tougher unilateral and multilateral sanctions. It’s time to offer the Iranians a clear choice between increased costs for continuing their troubling behavior, and concrete incentives that would come if they change course.”

“Incentives”? Mahmud Ahmadi-Nejad has vowed to destroy Israel and create another Holocaust. How about this incentive—a paraphrase from JFK during the Cuban missile debacle: “It shall be the policy of this nation to regard any missile launched from Iran against any ally of the United States as an attack by Iran on the United States, requiring a full retaliatory response upon Iran.”

Further, Obama insists, “I trust the American people to understand that it is not weakness, but wisdom to talk not just to our friends, but to our enemies, like Roosevelt did, and Kennedy did, and Truman did.”

Come again? A quick fact check and one finds that Franklin Roosevelt did not hold direct talks with Adolf Hitler or Hideki Tojo. Harry Truman’s “pre-conditions” for peace negotiations with Japan were two atomic bombs, and Truman didn’t talk with North Korean dictator Kim Il Sung after his invasion of South Korea in 1950. Instead, he sent troops, and we are still there, as we are in Japan and Germany. As for John Kennedy, he did meet with Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev in 1961. But Khrushchev knew, after Kennedy’s Bay of Pigs fiasco, that he could outflank Kennedy.

Elie Abel, who authored The Missile Crisis, the definitive text on Russia’s placement of long-range nukes in Cuba, said, “How close we came to Armageddon I did not fully realize until I started researching this book.” In it, he wrote, “There is reason to believe that Khrushchev took Kennedy’s measure in June 1961 and decided this was a young man who would shrink from hard decisions. There is no evidence to support the belief that Khrushchev ever questioned America’s power. He questioned only the president’s readiness to use it. As he once told Robert Frost, he came to believe that Americans are ‘too liberal to fight’.”

When Obama was asked if he would meet with North Korea’s Kim Jong-il, without preconditions, he responded, “I think it’s a disgrace that we have not spoken to them.”

Well heck, Ted Turner went to North Korea and did some negotiating. Perhaps Obama plans to appoint Turner’s ex, “Hanoi” Jane Fonda, his ambassador there.

Talk aside, we have boots on the ground in Iraq and Afghanistan, and in regard to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Obama’s abject nescience is readily apparent.

“Let me be as clear as I can be,” says Obama. “I intend to end this war. My first day in office I will bring the Joint Chiefs of Staff in and I will give them a new mission and that is to end this war—responsibly, deliberately, but decisively.”

The only way to end a war “responsibly, deliberately and decisively” is victory.

On retreat from Iraq, Obama says, “What’s important is to understand the difference between strategy and tactics... I am not somebody—unlike George Bush—who is willing to ignore facts on the basis of my preconceived notions.”

I have been through 16 national-security programs for senior tacticians and strategists, and I do not recall ever coming across any alumni reference to “Barack Obama.” I would suggest that Obama take a short course on The Long War.

Of course, Obama announced this week that he plans to visit Iraq for a “fact-finding mission,” in order to make “a thorough assessment” [Read: “Change my policy”]. Here is a fact he might consider: Attacks in Iraq are down more than 90 percent over the previous year.

Regarding al-Qa’ida strongholds in Afghanistan or Pakistan, Obama says, “I think it would be a profound mistake for us to use nuclear weapons in any circumstance.” Rule number one—NEVER take any option off the table, EVER.

Most stupefyingly, Obama has pledged to revitalize the Clinton Doctrine for dealing with terrorists—treat terrorism as a criminal matter.

In regard to Obama’s plan for overall military preparedness, it just gets worse.

“I will cut investments in unproven missile defense systems.” This year, both our sea-based SM-3 and ground-based midcourse defense system missiles proved to be successful. The U.S. Bureau of Arms Control concluded in May, “The ballistic missile danger to the US, its forces deployed abroad, and allies and friends is real and growing.” (See Obama’s pledge to abolish missile defense).

“I will not weaponize space.” Memo to Senator Obama: Our current policy is not to weaponize space.

“I will slow our development of future combat systems...” The average service age of our frontline fighter aircraft is 23 years. The Army’s Future Combat Systems is the first full-spectrum modernization effort since the 1960s. Of course, the Marines, who are still using some hardware from long-ago wars, have always improvised, adapted and overcome.

“I will set a goal of a world without nuclear weapons... I will seek a global ban on the production of fissile material and I will negotiate with Russia to take our ICBMs off hair-trigger alert and to achieve deep cuts in our nuclear arsenals.”

Well, I’m all for no nuclear weapons. However, until the other guys are willing to give up their 4,162 nukes, we had best maintain a deterrence strategy, and since most nuclear weapon components have a shelf life, we must continue to update our weapons for them to be functional. And what’s this nonsense about U.S. nuclear forces being on “hair-trigger alert”? Apparently, Candidate Obama has been watching reruns of “Dr. Strangelove.”

In his first annual address, President George Washington declared, “To be prepared for war, is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.” Apparently, Obama, and the rest of his far-Left cadre, missed that memo.

In 1994, Ronald Reagan observed, “The Democrats may remember their lines, but how quickly they forget the lessons of the past. I have witnessed five major wars in my lifetime, and I know how swiftly storm clouds can gather on a peaceful horizon... In the end, it all comes down to leadership, and that is what this country is looking for now.”

Indeed, it is.

WMD Yellowcake Silence To Loud To Ignore

The mainstream media's recent omission of the 550 metric tons of yellowcake uranium found in Iraq might be one of the most troubling situations concerning power and politics this country has ever known. In a nation where we all seem to be wrapped up in our Ipods, cell phones, computers, and iced lattes, there is not a huge out-pouring of thanks for the men and women who proudly serve our nation so we can have such luxuries. Most Americans could care less about politics and for maybe two months every four years, the apathetic tune in to the news to get an idea of the issues facing this nation and the candidates who have bravely decided to take them on. The question is how can they be truly informed when the media is so blatantly liberal and biased?  Does anyone know we are winning the war on terror? I keep waiting for the opinion polls on the war to turn around but I am not going to hold my breath on this one. The truth is, I don't think Americans know how well things are going and how close we are to winning and ending this theater of war because of the medias reluctance to talk about anything positive concerning the war. Surely if the New York Times believed that 44 consecutive days of the Abu Ghraib non-story deserved front page exposure then surely the discovery of yellowcake uranium in Iraq should at least make it once? Don't hold your breath on that one either. How is it every horrible mis-deed and tragedy seems to be just fine to report, but all of the reaffirming good news never seems to see the light of day? Survey says.........Agenda!

As I have mentioned in previous posts, we are winning the war on terror. It is far from over but we need to see this thing all the way through until the threat is completely eliminated. The lefts plan of pulling out all troops would absolutely be a disaster for a million reasons and the generals on the ground have said as much. Obama is in a tough position with his trip to Iraq coming up. Will he abandon his base and change his tune about the surge and what a success it has been? And will that in turn leave the door open to changing his mind about the way we proceed from here on out?

It will be interesting to say the least but for the time being, we have some more good news to celebrate despite what the mainstream media thinks. As I mentioned earlier, we did find 550 metric tons of yellowcake uranium in Iraq which after being enriched would have been able to yield hundreds of nuclear weapons. Looks like Saddam had weapons of mass destruction afterall or at the very least was close to having them. But I wouldn't hold my breath on the mainstream media reporting it.

God bless the men and women fighting for the United States of America.

Socialists for Socialized Medicine- It Doesn't Work

For any of you who frequent this blog, you will notice my condemnation for anything socialistic in nature. The liberals (socialists) plans for universal health care would not be excluded from this execration. What probably frustrates me the most about this whole argument is the left's disdain of comments relating to similar programs in Europe and Canada having not worked the way in which the programs were intended. Given the situations created by these programs, one would think a logical, rational, and reasonable soul would look at the problems of such programs and think twice about implementing them here in the United States, not to mention our own governments penchant for destroying everything it touches. But then again, we are talking about the left.

Everything government touches, it ruins. Take a look at Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, our national education system, and FEMA, just to name a few, and you will see bureaucratic ineptitude from start to finish. The reason is really quite simple why these programs and hundreds more like them have been miserable failures in alleviating the problems of its citizens; the United States government has taken on responsibilities it was not designed to undertake. Our Founding Fathers believed in limited government with little interference into the lives of its citizens. Given the track record of the United States government, why would we entertain the idea of ceding more control and money to them when every other program its has created is either insolvent or close to it?  Its clear the left feels "cradle to grave" entitlements should be our future despite our inability to keep up with the rising costs of entitlement programs, such as the ones mentioned above, that we already have. The Founding Fathers are spinning in their graves when they see how close we are to destroying their legacy and accomplishments with foolish notions of "socialistic utopias" and "classless societies". The truth is this line of thinking is dangerous to to our freedoms.

A Canadian woman by the name of Shona Robertson- Holmes is just the latest victim of one of the failed leftist policies her country has implemented in the past decade or so. It seems Ms. Holmes was diagnosed with a tumor but was told the wait to get the tumor removed was going to be over 4 months, leaving her blind. The Politico says it like this:

"Shona Robertson-Holmes was a mess. She had crushing headaches, insomnia and adrenaline levels so high that she constantly felt as if she had just stepped in front of a speeding bus. And that’s not to mention her rapidly deteriorating eyesight.

She headed to her family doctor, who recommended that she see two specialists.

But Robertson-Holmes is Canadian, and her state-provided health care gave her a wait time of four months to see a neurologist and six months to see an endocrinologist. Unable to get an expedited appointment, and with her eyesight worsening, Robertson-Holmes called the Mayo Clinic in Arizona and went in for tests and a diagnosis within a week.

The doctors there told her she had a four-to-six-week window to have a marble-sized tumor on her pituitary gland removed before her vision loss would be irreversible.

Returning home with the diagnosis, the Ontario native was still unable to expedite the surgery. Three weeks later, she came back to Mayo for brain surgery. And she took out a second mortgage to pay for the $100,000 ordeal."

The truth is there are hundreds of cases similar to this from Europe and Canada where they are seeing the real effects of socialized medicine. Many now come to the United States to have their surgeries because the wait time back home is just too long. One other side effect of the socialized health care plans has been the fleeing of quality physicians to more free market systems.

This is just another example of the left going off half cocked without thinking through the repurcussions of such ideas. But this time we have proof from other nations that what they want to implement doesn't really work. Whether its the price of food sky-rocketing or the poor starving to death from the mandated creation of bio-fuels, the left cannot see the forest for the trees. There is a better way to help the people with health care, its just not through another nightmare government program.

Iraq- More Great News

The situation in Iraq and the overall global war on terror is going rather well as of late, prompting Barack Obama to now say he is "refining" his thoughts about Iraq. If Obama is now reconsidering his views on Iraq shouldn't that be making his hard left base re-think their positions as well? I wouldn't count on it. I thought I would copy and paste an article here concerning the news out of Iraq. Again, it is good news and definitely needs to be talked about on all levels of social interaction. Its from an unlikely source and needs to be shown and forwarded to everyone. We are winning this war and we are defeating the terrorists. Our continued efforts in the war are critical to making sure we not only win, but destroy completely our enemies. Enjoy!

"Optimism Grows in Iraq as Daily Life Improves"

That headline appears not in NR nor on Fox News, but in the leftish German newsweekly Spiegel. It opens:

There is an unexpected air of normalcy prevailing in Baghdad these days, with consumption flourishing and confidence in the government growing. The progress is astonishing, but can it last?

Pork is available in Baghdad once again. Not just in the Green Zone, where US diplomats can enjoy their spare ribs and Parma ham, but also across the Tigris River, in the real Baghdad, at "Al-Warda" on Karada Street. Bassim Dencha, 32, one of the few Christians remaining in Iraq and the co-owner of Baghdad's finest supermarket, has developed a supply line from Syria. As a result, he now has frozen pork chops and bratwurst arranged in his freezers, next to boxes of frozen French fries and German Black Forest Cakes. And the customers are buying.

For four years, selling pork or alcohol in Baghdad was a security risk. But the acts of terror committed by Islamist fundamentalists, who once punished such violations of their interpretation of the Koran with attacks on businesses and their owners, have gradually subsided. The supply of imported goods is also relatively secure today, now that roads through the Sunni Triangle are significantly safer than they were only a few months ago.
"It's worth it again," says businessman Bassim Dencha. "All we need now is enough electricity to reopen our refrigerated warehouse."

Two kilometers down the street, business is booming late into the night at Ali Lami's roadside snack bar. Before the war the establishment, a Baghdad institution, was a favorite hangout for former dictator Saddam Hussein's henchmen and United Nations weapons inspectors alike. Today professors and students from the university, which is once again open every day, come here to eat shawarma, an Arab fast-food dish consisting of shaved meat and salad served in pita bread.
This fall the manager, Rassak Rashid, 44, plans to open an outdoor seating area in a grove of palm trees behind the snack bar. The lanterns are already hanging in the trees. "Maybe then the police will stop telling our customers to get off the street," says Rashid.

He isn't referring to parking violations, but to the fear of bombs that could be hidden in cars parked along the curb. The police patrolling the streets in front of places like Ali Lami's snack bar aren't entirely convinced that this fragile sense of normalcy will last. While there are certainly signs of improvement, the dangers of life in Baghdad haven't disappeared.

Liberals Should Remember

I want to wish you all a very safe and Happy 4th of July. I hope we all can remember what this nation and its people have endured so we can be free. Just because we are the greatest and most free nation, it doesn't mean that we can relax. We must guard our liberties and always be prepared to fight, and perhaps die, for what we believe.

It is the Soldier

It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks nothing worth a war, is worse. A man who has nothing which he cares more about than he does about his personal safety is a miserable creature who has no chance at being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." - John Stuart Mill

Obama'a Tax Increase The Highest Ever

The Democrat's (socialists) notion that "all things European would be just fine for America", would no doubt continue and expand under a president Obama. It doesn't matter how unsuccessful a policy it might be, if the Europeans are doing it, we must do it. Democrats are all smiles about saddling the American taxpayers with more taxes in order to pay for "universal health care", a system that has been shown to be a complete failure wherever it has been implemented but hey, why let other's failures be your guide? The same thing holds true for Obama's plan to put us at European levels of taxation and give the nation the largest tax increase in our history. Obama and his socialist cronies believe the best way to help the economy is to tax productivity. They still don't understand the way a free market should work as indicated by their continued government regulation policies and interference. The poor do not create jobs nor maintain much productivity in the work force as many opt for public aid and welfare systems with the incentive to leave such programs no longer relevant. The Democrats hammering those who create jobs and wealth for others will only hurt the ones they have tried to help, the poor. They contend the best way to help people is from the bottom - up instead of top - down which is not only economically wrong but economically dangerous for the rest of us. Lets look at what Obama is promising as far as taxes are concerned.

Obama has stated many times he will let the Bush tax cuts expire. This will allow the top two tax rates to return to 36 and 39.6 percent. His plan would boost the top marginal rate to well over 55 percent—before the inclusion of state and local taxes—resulting in many individuals seeing their marginal tax rate double. The Heritage Foundation explains it this way, "Senator Obama's new tax rate would give the United States one of the highest tax rates among developed countries. Currently only six of the top 30 industrial nations have a tax rate for all levels of government combined of over 55 percent. Under this tax plan, the United States would join this group and have a higher top rate than such high-tax nations as Sweden and Denmark. The top marginal rate would exceed 60 percent with the inclusion of state and local taxes, which means that only Hungary would exceed Senator Obama's new proposed top tax."  But what is truly frightening is that of the six countries with higher tax rates than 55 percent, the average unemployment rate is 7.35 percent. Plus his tax plan adds to the national debt and will leave us even more unprepared to handle America's rising cost of entitlement programs such as Social Security and Medicare. Here are some quick numbers showing the impact of the tax cuts and the repercussions of them expiring:

$2.4 Trillion- The overall tax increase faced by American families, seniors, and businesses if the Bush tax cuts expire.

$1,716- The average tax increase for over 100 million Americans if tax cuts are allowed to expire.

$2,034- The average tax increase that will hit 17 million seniors if the Bush tax cuts expire.

8.3 Million- The number of jobs created since the tax cuts of 2003.

$91 Billion- The cost of reinstating the death tax.

44 million- The number of married couples affected if the Marriage Penalty is reinstated.

$1,480- The average cost in 2000 for cuples punished by the Marriage Penalty

$108 Billion- The reduction in the federal deficit in 2005 thanks to the economic growth sparked by the tax cuts.

No doubt Obama's plan will slow the economy to a crawl and definitely send us into a recession. The question is can we get this news to the masses before the election in November? I think we can. We just need to keep on the offensive.

Obama's (Non) Accomplishments

Barack Obama has released a new 60 second ad touting his "legislative accomplishments" and I for one, could not wait to see the video. Considering Obama has come out of political obscurity, wouldn't it make sense to look at the man's voting history so we all have an idea of the direction he wants to take this nation? Much to the dismay of the democrats (socialists), Obama's record is very questionable indeed and has garnered the Senator from the Soviet satelite state of Illinois the distinguished title of "most liberal" in the U.S. Senate. His voting record is another example of his judgement, as is his sitting in a church for 20 years listening to hate speech from a pastor he credits as his biggest spiritual advisor. These are both logical and necessary questions if we are going to get to know this "savior" from the Democratic party.

The ad, which is called "The Country I Love", is playing in many key battle ground states. In it, Obama talks about "laws" he has passed as if he was the sole authority on the "law" and no other legislator had a vote. But truth be known, Obama only sponsored one of the three bills mentioned and perhaps what is the most striking is that two of the bills were "accomplishments" of his days in the Illinois senate and not the U.S. Senate. Yep, that's right, Obama couldn't even find "accomplishments" from his time in the U.S. Senate to talk about. In fact the only national law Obama could tout in the ad was a bill extending health care to troops, but Obama was neither a sponsor or co-sponsor of the bill, so why is he taking credit for it?

The fact is, we don't know very much about the Senator from Illinois. But anytime we start asking questions, we are the ones who are wrong for asking the questions. Obama doesn't have the extensive record in politics that Senator McCain has, so there is no track record of his policies and ideology. All we have are his words to go off of and quite honestly, they scare the hell out of me.

Activist Judges and A "Living Constitution"

I have put together some wonderful quotes from a wide range of eras and people concerning the Courts and various issues taken up by the courts. The lefts idea of a "living constitution" is a fabrication of the worst kind and has no basis in intellectual honesty, logic, or reason. Let the following quotes serve as proof.

“[T]here is not a syllable in the [Constitution] which directly empowers the national courts to construe the laws according to the spirit of the Constitution...” - Alexander Hamilton in Federalist No. 81

“The opinion which gives to the judges the right to decide what laws are constitutional and what not, not only for themselves in their own sphere of action but for the Legislature and Executive also in their spheres, would make the Judiciary a despotic branch.” - Thomas Jefferson

“As long as judges tinker with the Constitution to ‘do what the people want,’ instead of what the document actually commands, politicians who pick and confirm new federal judges will naturally want only those who agree with them politically.” - Justice Antonin Scalia in 2005

“Nowhere else in the Constitution does a ”right“ attributed to ”the people“ refer to anything other than an individual right. What is more, in all six other provisions of the Constitution that mention ”the people,“ the term unambiguously refers to all members of the political community, not an unspecified subset... The Second Amendment extends, prima facie, to all instruments that constitute bearable arms... The very text of the Second Amendment implicitly recognizes the pre-existence of the right and declares only that it ‘shall not be infringed’.” - Justice Antonin Scalia in Heller decision

“We know of no other enumerated constitutional right whose core protection has been subjected to a freestanding ‘interest-balancing’ approach. The very enumeration of the right takes out of the hands of government—even the Third Branch of Government—the power to decide on a case-by-case basis whether the right is really worth insisting upon. A constitutional guarantee subject to future judges’ assessments of its usefulness is no constitutional guarantee at all. Constitutional rights are enshrined with the scope they were understood to have when the people adopted them, whether or not future legislatures or (yes) even future judges think that scope too broad... Undoubtedly some think that the Second Amendment is outmoded. That is perhaps debatable, but what is not debatable is that it is not the role of this Court to pronounce the Second Amendment extinct.”
Justice Antonin Scalia, for whom the Constitution has long been an unerring compass in Heller decision

“The Constitution shall never be construed... to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” - Samuel Adams

"The wall of separation between church and state is a metaphor based upon bad history, a metaphor which has proved useless as a guide to judging. It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned. ... The greatest injury of the 'wall' notion is its mischievous diversion of judges from the actual intention of the drafters of the Bill of Rights." - Chief Justice William Rehnquist

"[The Judicial Branch] may truly be said to have neither FORCE nor WILL, but merely judgment...liberty can have nothing to fear from the judiciary alone, but would have everything to fear from its union with either of the other departments." - Alexander Hamilton in Federalist No. 78

"[T]he true key for the construction of everything doubtful in a law is the intention of the law-makers. This is most safely gathered from the words, but may be sought also in extraneous circumstances provided they do not contradict the express words of the law." -Thomas Jefferson

"The constitution of the United States is to receive a reasonable interpretation of its language, and its powers, keeping in view the objects and purposes, for which those powers were conferred. By a reasonable interpretation, we mean, that in case the words are susceptible of two different senses, the one strict, the other more enlarged, that should be adopted, which is most consonant with the apparent objects and intent of the Constitution." - Joseph Story

"The first and governing maxim in the interpretation of a statute is to discover the meaning of those who made it." - James Wilson

"The Constitution...is a mere thing of wax in the hands of the judiciary which they may twist and shape into any form they please." - Thomas Jefferson

Finally....A Constructionist Decision

“The Constitution shall never be construed... to prevent the people of the United States who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms.” —Samuel Adams

The United States Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in favor of an individuals right to keep and bear arms was the latest in a series of opinions handed down from the high court. However, this is one the American people should rightly celebrate. Why, you may ask? Well, the Supreme Court used a strict constructionist approach to arrive at their decision, at least as far as the majority opinion is concerned. A course of action that has been all to prevelent in the last 50-60 years has been the actions of liberal judges using everything but the Constitution, including foreign laws, global litmus tests, and their own left-wing ideologies, to force issues down the throats of the American people by assuming the Constitutional role of the legislature. These left-wing ideologies and and new "rights" not found in the Constitution are issues that democrats could never pass at the ballot box. I have eluded to the threat posed to our freedoms by the runaway judiciary in an earlier post.

But what strikes me the most as I read the various blogs and commentaries on today's decision is how many now see the judiciary as an extention of an ideology and an administration. One went even so far as to say conservatism beat  liberalism 5-4. See, I don't see it so much as conservatism as I do constructionism. The ridiculous dog and pony shows that the judiciary nominees have to endure are a perfect example of the role the left thinks the judiciary should play in our system of government. "Whats your views on guns, abortion, the death penalty, and so on...", are some of the ridiculous questions nominees must answer during the confirmation hearings. Whatever happened to upholding the Constitution and using it as the basis on which your decisions are based? The United States Constitution is the only criteria to be used by the justices.

As usual, The Heritage Foundation says it best in its commentary on the issue:

Far-left critics of the decision are already claiming that the decision represents “judicial activism.” Nothing could be further from the truth. Justice Antonin Scalia’s majority opinion is a textbook example of constitutional originalism. Using simple grammar and crystal-clear logic, Scalia destroys the argument of dissenting Justice John Paul Stevens that the first half of the Second Amendment — “A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a Free State” — negates the second — “the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” Scalia writes:

Logic demands that there be a link between the stated purpose and the command. The Second Amendment would be nonsensical if it read, "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to petition for redress of grievances shall not be infringed." … That requirement of logical connection may cause a prefatory clause to resolve an ambiguity in the operative clause. But apart from that clarifying function, a prefatory clause does not limit or expand the scope of the operative clause.

Justice Stephen Breyer’s defense is equally specious, constructing a convoluted balancing test that ultimately reaches the conclusion that the state’s interest in controlling crime outweighs an individuals right to bear arms. Nevermind that since the District of Columbia first instituted its ban on handguns, there has been only one year (1985) that the homicide rate in the city fell below what it was in 1976. Worse, in 15 of the 29 years since the ban went into effect, D.C. had either the first or second highest murder rate among the nation's 50 largest cities. A National Academy of Sciences report based on 253 journal articles, 99 books, 43 government publications and a survey of 80 different gun-control laws, shows no link between restrictions on gun ownership and lower rates of crime, firearms violence or even accidents with guns.

Even if the court’s four far-left members who dissented in the decision do not understand the issue, the American people do. According to Gallup, 73% of the U.S. public believes the Second Amendment to the Constitution guarantees the rights of Americans to own guns. And almost 7 out of 10 Americans are opposed to a law that would make the possession of a handgun illegal.

I will close with a quote from James Madison, the Father of The Constitution:

"I entirely concur in the propriety of resorting to the sense in which the Constitution was accepted and ratified by the nation. In that sense alone it is the legitimate Constitution. ... If the meaning of the text be sought in the changeable meaning of the words composing it, it is evident that the shape and attributes of the Government must partake of the changes to which the words and phrases of all living languages are constantly subject. What a metamorphosis would be produced in the code of law if all its ancient phraseology were to be taken in its modern sense. And that the language of our Constitution is already undergoing interpretations unknown to its founder, will I believe appear to all unbiassed Enquirers into the history of its origin and adoption."

Haditha Marines Had No Access To Courts

For anyone who would like to see the distinct differences in the way our own soldiers are treated as compared to the enemy combatants captured and currently detained at Gitmo, look no further than the circus trials of the Marines accused of murder in Haditha. To recap, eight United States Marines have been put through military tribunals for allegedly killing 24 civilians in Haditha and as of this writing, six of the Marines have had charges dismissed and a seventh was cleared through a court martial. An eighth is awaiting his turn but seeing as how the previous seven went, he too is expected to have all charges dropped and rightfully so. The latest to have charges dropped is Lt. Col. Jeffrey Chessani. Chessani has hinted at possibly suing Pennsylvania Democrat Represenative John Murtha who claimed the Marines murdered "in cold blood". Not only was Murtha's comments absurd, they were made with no knowledge of the entire situation. Murtha decided to convict the Marines before knowing exactly what was factual and what was just hearsay. Murtha, a former Marine himself, is currently and deservedly being sued by the last Marine to not yet have been cleared through the military tribunal process. But what should jump out at the average American is that thanks to the recent Supreme Court ruling, the enemy terrorist combatants in Gitmo have access to the American courts to detest their detentions when the above Marines never had that luxury.

The repercussions of the Supreme Court decision to allow enemy combatants access to our Constitution will be seen for years to come. For some unknown and mysterious reason, the left in this country view the war on terror as a law enforcement problem and this latest decision shows just how they think it should be handled. Now soldiers have to worry about collecting evidence and reading Miranda rights to people who indescriminately kill women and children, and wear no uniform of any nation. These enemy combatants have been captured taking up arms against the United States and now the very system they openly abhor has opened up its arms and welcomed them into our judicial system. How can we, as a nation, allow this right to our enemies but not our own soldiers?

We have been dealt a huge blow in our ability to effectively wage war on our enemies. No longer capturing an enemy will ensure they are out of the equation when it comes to warfare. To date, 50 former Gitmo prisoners have been released and found fighting again against the United States. You can bet that these numbers will increase thanks to the Supreme Court decision and unfortunately, more American lives will be lost.
